Kids In Crisis

Rusty Miller

JONESBORO, ARKANSAS: "I knew it was bad. I met four ambulances before I turned into the school, and there were two more coming out"--Bono, Arkansas mayor Ralph Lee (after the Jonesboro shooting). more...

The Value of Family

Warren E. Berkley

Loretta Girzartis said, "The world is full of lonely people, each isolated in a private, secret dungeon."1What a dismal image. And what a divergence from the beautiful words and pictures in Scripture, of mother and father with their children. To be placed into the arms of a caring mother and father minutes after birth; to be surrounded by warmth and love from siblings and grandparents, aunts and uncles; to have your needs met, your mind informed and your desires controlled and restrained; to know that there are people who love you and will love you all your life, and are united together in seeking your best This is no dungeon. This is the value of family as designed by the Creator. more...

Teaching Kids to Face Their Fears

Mark Roberts

It is a scary world out there, isn't it? When I was in school "bad" kids shot out windows and put holes in stop signs. Now kids shoot each other -- and not just in Jonesboro. Gang and drug violence has come to many of our schools, and our children know it. What can we say to our children about the sheer terror that comes with going "out there" every day? more...

Teaching Kids to Deal With Anger

Steve Dewhirst

Anger is an integral part of the human experience; stealing guns and killing one's enemies is not. Anger is often justified; personal vengeance is not. Anger properly managed bears the mark of godliness; anger out of control will send people to hell. more...

When Good Kids Go Bad

Mark Roberts

His name is Carlton Stowers. He is a widely read author. Then his 25-year-old son brutally murdered his ex-wife. Mr. Stowers suddenly found himself in a nightmare of legal battles, arrests, and publicity. He wrote a book to try to deal with it all, and in a recent interview made this poignant statement: "Most parents out there do everything they can for their children. But there are no guarantees, and that's probably the most frightening thing about parenting." more...

Drug Proofing Your Kids

Rusty Miller

On the front page of this issue, two national sources are quoted in regard to the drug problem in Plano, Texas, a suburb less than twenty miles from us. Twelve children have died of heroin overdose in the past year. Recently, another fourteen were arrested at school for heroin possession. However, what has been most disturbing has been the knowledge that these kids were not considered "bad kids" by their parents, their friends, their community. They were average kids, who looked like your kids and mine. more...

The Preacher's Pen

Mark Roberts

Nothing causes our nation more concern than seeing children in trouble. From Jessica McClure down a well in Midland to the kids caught in David Koresh's deathtrap in Waco to the girls killed in Jonesboro we can get our national indignation running high in a hurry over hurt children. Perhaps thisis because kids are helpless, or because we easily see our own children and grandchildren in these places of terror and death. We are concerned about kids, aren't we? more...
